Anonymous asked: When i first met you I was intrigued. Mainly because I used to play the same instruments as you did and wondered at how you could easily best me if we were ever to compete. That interest lead to friendship. That friendship has lead to an appreciation for you in my life that you may never fully know. I read your blog here and there and I kick myself for not getting to know you better so we could be...

Dinner and Math
Dad: There's a tortilla left if you want to make lunch for tomorrow.
Sharayah: I already did.
Dad: ... I only cooked enough for us each to have two.
Sharayah: Maybe mom only had one.
Dad: I thought she had two.
Sharayah: Or maybe we have a tortilla fairy in the house.
Dad: Or maybe I miscounted when I cooked them.
Sharayah: Probably more realistic. I've never seen a tortilla fairy.
Dad: Have you seen the tooth fairy?
Sharayah: Well...no.
Mom: What's going on?
Sharayah: We have a tortilla fairy.
Mom: What?
Dad: There's an extra tortilla. I had one and you had two and Sharayah had two.
Sharayah: ...I only had one...I'M THE TORTILLA FAIRY!!

I feel like maybe I need to share a little bit of my story, so here goes. I have known since the 6th grade that I want to teach high school band.  I studied music education in college, worked my ass off, and then graduated last May.  I had started looking for teaching positions in March, and was still looking upon graduation.  I wanted to teach, I wanted my own classroom, but there were not a lot...

You Win, Dad
My dad and I tend to banter a little as he's making dinner because I like to sample as he's making it, and he wants me to leave some for the actual meal. Today, I snuck out of my room while he was out of the kitchen and stole a piece of hamburger.
Dad: Can I help you?
Sharayah: *obviously with mouth full* No, I'm good.
Dad: Stay out of my kitchen!
Sharayah: You weren't guarding it.
Dad: I was taking care of your mother 'cause she's sick. I was doing something nice!
Sharayah: Oh.
Dad: I'm going to tell Katie on you.
Sharayah: Katie already punished us today; she made us cash in pop cans for the church. $45 of pop cans. And it was gross and sticky and slimy and wet and I found maggots on my pants!
Mom: *gasp* You're kidding!
Dad: *thoughtful look* Maggots can't live off of the sugar in pop. They like flesh.
Sharayah: *shudder* I'm going to go shower.
And, of course, by the time I was finished, dinner was made and my parents were eating without me.

I have no idea what I’m doing with my life.  And I suppose that’s nothing unusual for someone my age, but I’m not used to not having a plan.  I’ve known since the 6th grade that I want to teach band.  And now that I have my degree and my license, I’m not sure that’s what I want.  At least not right now.  Someday; it’s still the dream job.   But right now...

Ruthless Trust
I just started reading Ruthless Trust by Brennan Manning, and I have a feeling this is exactly what I need to be studying at this point in my life.  More on that later. Here is a quote from the book that I am wrestling with: “The underlying premise of this book:  the splendor of a human heart which trusts that it is loved gives God more pleasure than Westminster Cathedral, the Sistine...
