The Dreaming Tree

January 6, 2012
I’m really excited to share this.  I haven’t for a while because I didn’t want to come across as bragging, but I think it’s better to share in hopes of inspiring others rather than hide for fear of annoying others.
For the last year (and a couple months) God laid it on my heart to donate the money I make teaching clarinet lessons.  Sometimes it was really difficult; for a while, without the money from lessons, my bills were more than my income.  In fact, right now my bills are more than my income.  But God has always made sure that I have just enough.
Over the last year, my students have allowed me to donate about $1,500 to various organizations.  Most goes to World Vision, as their gift catalogue provides a tangible way for me to show my students what their money has gone to.  I sponsor one child in Uganda through World Vision, and have also given towards music lessons, wells, schools and school supplies, and immunizations.  Blood:Water Mission is another organization that I’ve supported because I value their holistic approach.  Through Water.org I teamed up with other nerdfighters to build a well in Savann Tabak, Haiti.  I sponsor a second child in Uganda through AOET.
Recently, I was able to show my students everything that they had accomplished by taking clarinet lessons.  Over the next year I will be encouraging them to communicate with our two sponsored children to help build relationships and compassion.  And I hope to inspire them to see that it is possible to change the world even as high school students simply by using their talents.
