What Google and Facebook are hiding from you.
I’m not surprised. Very annoyed. But not surprised.
I’ve read a lot of dystopian novels recently, and this kind of scares me with how close it is to those novels. Most take a certain ‘what-if’ and explore the consequences. For example, 1984 and government oppression, Brave New World and amusing ourselves to death, The Uglies series and making everyone look the same to stop conflict. There’s something very frightening about taking the idea that “A squirrel dying in front of your house may be more relevant to your interests right now than people dying in Africa.” too far. (Though personally, I think the thought itself goes too far by merely existing.) In an increasingly post modern and relativistic society, I think we need to careful about personalizing the information we perceive at the risk of erasing and distorting what is happening in the world. How we do that, I don’t know. But as the end of the video hints, if we figured it out with newspapers, maybe we can figure it out with the internet too.
