The Dreaming Tree

February 14, 2012

For the last two months I’ve been having my students write short essay responses to questions based on their lessons.  They turn the journals in, and I respond to the questions and hand the journals back to them to edit previous responses and add more.  At the end of a unit I give a final grade for the journal.  The purpose of this is to build writing skills and encourage critical thinking.  One journal project had them answering questions about the period of the judges in the Old Testament (I teach at a Christian school).

As the students were looking at the book of Ruth, one of their essay responses had them looking at the significance name meanings of those in the story of Ruth.  Name meanings have always fascinated me, and they are so purposeful in this story.  Ruth means ‘companion’, and that’s evident in the way she gives up everything to go with Naomi and adopt her beliefs.  Naomi’s name change signifies a change in her character.  Boaz means swift which refers to his role as the kinsman-redeemer.  One of my students wrote the response, “Boaz means swift because he ‘swept’ Ruth off her feet!”  How cute!

Happy Valentine’s Day, tumblr!
