Seezit here is a friend from college who was kind enough to share her notes from a session at the OMEA convention in January, and I’d like to follow suit.
This session is a little hard to share since I don’t have video or audio, but it was the best one I went to, so I’ll try to explain as clearly as I can.
Musical Extensions of Children’s Literature (Grades 4 - 6)-David Noyse
In this session, we read the book Jungle Drums by Graeme Base. After getting a sense of the story, we proceeded to put it to music. A ‘sound carpet’ was formed using djembes and congas playing an ostinato to create a ‘jungle drum’ atmosphere. The sound carpet was the background music to be played throughout the telling of the story. Next we identified recurring themes in the book (the ways the animals were described: stunning spots, striking stripes, etc) and used various percussion as sound effects for each of these descriptors. A bongo was used to bring to life the moments where Ngiri (the main character) wished on the magical bongos. Finally we chose a narrator and performed the book.
This was an excellent way to bring literature to life and to help kids learn to play as an ensemble. There’s tons of room for creativity, and this would be a great idea for elementary music programs/performances.
