In Acts 17:16-34, Paul is teaching the Athenians about how God wants to be known, just as he knows us. Though his ways are beyond what we can imagine, that doesn’t stop or discourage God from making himself known. The Athenians, however, had at least one altar with the inscription, “To an unknown god”. Paul is making the distinction between unknown, unknowing, and unknowable gods, and the known and all-knowing God. Verses 26-27 tell us that every circumstance, every detail of our lives, were planned by God even before we were born for a very specific purpose. Those circumstances cause us to search for him, to seek him. God so much desires for us to know him that he crafts our very lives to turn us toward him.
