“Blue Train” by John Coltrane on Blue Train

John William Coltrane was a saxophonist and composer during the bebop period of jazz.  The album Blue Train is considered Hard Bop, which is an extension of bebop that incorporates R & B and gospel music.

Too Young To Go Steady as played by John Coltrane on his Ballads album

Coltrane is a saxophonist, bandleader, and composer, usually in the bebop or avant-garde jazz styles.  In this recording he is playing the tenor saxophone on a classic standard by Jimmy McHugh, originally performed by Nat King Cole.  This is much more lyrical (and tonal) than his normal playing, but it’s absolutely beautiful.  Lyrics below.

Too young to go steady,
Too young, I hear her say,
She says we’re not ready,
But then why am I feeling this way?

Too young, so she tells me
She says, we’ll have to wait,
Why wait
‘Till it may be too late?

Can’t she realize she drives me wild,
Is she made of stone?
Must she always treat me like a child,
Won’t she ever own up, we’re grown up?

Someday, she’ll be sorry,
Someday, just wait and see!
She’ll wish
She’d gone steady
With me!
